Its been a while, but its time for another fitness video!  Today I worked arms, legs, and abs.  If you do this workout really fast it becomes a cardio workout.  I did 30 reps of each workout, and I used 5 lb weights, but you can use more or less weight, but feel free to use more weight or less weight.  Here is the workout breakdown:
  • one leg push-ups 15 each leg (feel free to do push ups on your knees or on your toes, whatever you can do!)
  • weighted squats with a military press
  • knee up's with a twist, and a sprint back; I did 20 knee up's and then sprinted back and I did this 3 times...so its 60 reps instead of 30
  • weighted walking lunges with a knee up and bicep curl
  • straight arm weighted overhead crunches
  • plank position knee to elbow lifts- 15 each leg
  • curtsy lunges with weights and a up right row- 15 each leg
  • twists with a weight
Have FUN!

We are quite blessed with good health, aside from Rory's leg, so now that Jon, Rory and I have all been sick within the week is just dreadful!  Its so hard on everyone!

I've been trying to get everything done for him since he feels terrible.  I kind of feel overwhelmed since when he gets home from work he helps entertain Rory, so now I get to entertain her all night and let me be completely honest....there is no good way to load a dishwasher with a curious toddler!

I didn't want to wake him up this morning by me leaving the room to go work out because I knew he had to get up early to go to the doctors anyway, so we slept in (till 6-woohoo!).  I was really hoping to get a good workout in while he napped today with Rory, but I only got 30 minutes of my bike because I couldn't stop thinking about all the things I had to do!

Now I am such a workout junkie that all I can think about is ONLY 30 minutes of riding the bike.  But hey...the floors don't sweep themselves, and I know Rory will be up any second and the last think I want is Jon to feel bad and have a gross house.

Hopefully the worst of the sickness is behind us!

I will be the first to admit that I have a bad love/ hate relationship with exercise.  I often hate waking up early to do it, but after I am up and into it (and especially after I am done) I love it.  I always get excited when it is a weekend because I will often take a day off and spend it with my family and relax, but around nap time- I just can't seem to do it because I feel kind of "guilty" for not working out and being kind of lazy- so i end up doing a little something: often something small, but still something.

Is this a common problem or just me?

I know that letting your body have a day of rest is a good thing, but how much?  Do you take one or two days off?   Or could you just do something simple on your off days like a nice abdominal session or even some yoga?

So...I got a coupon for a free week trial at One Life Fitness...and since Jon was home Sunday and Monday we decided it was time to use it.  So I'm making the most out of my time and trying to be at the gym as much as possible and take as many classes as I can so that by the end of the week I will never want to see a gym again!

Since Sunday I have been to 5 classes, and have used the gym equipment for 3 hours...I'm literally trying to go there every chance I can!

I can say, I haven't been to a gym since moving to Virginia Beach (except for the gyms on the military base).  Back when I lived in Kansas, in a small college town, I worked as a personal trainer and fitness instructor.   The gyms I worked at were both small mainly filled with either college or old people.

This gym is very different- its full of young people and is very fashion forward!  I have a lot of workout clothes but I buy all of them on clearance so they don't match or anything- which is fine for me!  (I used to wear a tee shirt and soccer shorts and I have come a long way!).  A lot of people have beautifully matching outfits; some have lace, some have cute backs, some have cute ties, its awesome!

I have also noticed how social the gym is...apparently the people there aren't working out during their toddlers nap times!  I am in there during her nap (or when Jon can watch her) and I work out as hard as i can until i have to leave, no water breaks (unless needed), no socialization, just hard core intense fitness.  It makes me laugh seeing people lift a few weights, then walk around and talk....they must be childless!  hahaha!

I am very surprised how much I am enjoying the gym- its amazingly clean which I like, spacious, and has great equipment!  Its AWESOME!  It makes my little gyms in Kansas look like childs play!

I will write more on the classes later, however- as of now, I have enjoyed 4 of the 5.

More to come!

Yesterday, my husband, daughter and I went to Dicks sporting goods to kill some time.  We always like to go and see whats on sale and Rory loves to try out trampolines.  Yesterday, they had their 50% off their clearance and we scored big!

I got 2 pair of under armour work out tights, a Nike work out skirt, 2 pair of Reebok shorts, a Reebok built in bra top, and a baby carrier backpack for Rory all for $120!

I was extremely skeptical about the Nike work out skirt- I know my husband has been looking at getting me one for quite some time, and I have almost hoped he wouldnt' get one for me out of fear that I would hate it and he would waste money buying it for me...however I LOVE it!  It has built in shorts in it so I'm not skanking it up at the gym, and its not tight and extremely airy!

I like it so much that since Daddy is home today- I'm wearing it for a huge 2 hour work out session while Rory naps!

I love getting good deals- and work out clothes that can get $$$!

So today i got up at 5 am to work out, actually i got up with Jon at 4:30 but i didn't start working out until 5.  I was actually excited last night because i had a whole hour to push myself.  However, i woke up and it was really quite chilly and all i wanted to do was drink a cup of hot chocolate (preferably real hot chocolate made with my Rory's whole milk rather than my normal diet 25 calorie hot chocolate made with water, and my beachbumandbaby mamma gave me some sbux hot coco to try) and watch some junk on hulu.  I always feel so bad about myself and so guilty if i don't work out so i made Jon some coffee and a lunch and went up stairs.
I think i would have burnt more calories drinking the hot chocolate....hahaha!  I did 20 min of arms, legs and abs, then 40 min of circuits- basically 60 seconds of a work out, 10 workouts, 4 times.  I did it and i was sweating and even opened the window upstairs but my energy was gone, it was sloth-like.

here was my circuits
1. low jack squats- jumping of course
2. plank knee In's with a push up
3. tow touches
4. burpees
5. plank push ups
6. crunches
7. one leg jumping squats
8. push up- jacks
9. oblique crunches on the bosu
10. stand up

i still feel like i didn't do anything at all- I probably should have pushed my lazy butt to work harder but i needed to clean the house before the therapist got here!  I may try to work out a bit later....

Today was another fun day with Rory, although she sometimes makes me feel like I'm losing my mind, its days like today that make me feel normal.  One of our fun activities was playing with an old container that had peppercorns in it.  She would sign for help for me to open it, we would smell it, and then make stinky faces for it.  It was fun, and I knew she had fun because it took a whole 15 min!
smelling the pepper

stinky pepper!

Rory's doctor's appointment is next Thursday, its officially a week away.  I hopefully will be blogging more until then and after the appointment.  CFD is so rare that there is not alot of moms out there who know some of the feelings I am currently having, I am thankful that this condition is not more popular, but at the same time wish I could communicate to another mom who knows the feelings I am having.  Guess what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Tomorrow daddy is leaving at 5 am so we are planning a killer workout: frequency push ups, squats, lunges, push ups, and of course abs abs abs.  We are hoping to work out for at least an hour and then clean the house before Rory gets up.  She has her Therapy appointment with the wonderful Wendy at 11:15 and then the sky is the limit.

Thank you Aurora for being such a wonderful daughter....thank you for going easy on me today ;)

Saturday, I participated in the 2011 Mud run which should be called the 2011 Sand Run!  We woke up early, packed up the car and went to the race to get chipped and ready.  We had to wake up Rory at 6:30am instead of her normal 7am, which really bothered me- I hate breaking her routine up, but Jon assured me that it was only one day and she would be ok.

My uncertainty with Rory intensified when we got to the race, she was really out of it and just wanted to be held.  She didn't want to walk or do anything but be extremely quiet and be held.  This behavior may be normal for most children, but not my little Rory, she always is up for walking and making sweet noises.  I was worried how she would react with daddy in a strange place away from her familiar toys and high chair.  I almost pined the number on my Jon and said "Good luck Daddy, you will be the fastest women in the age group of 25-30."  Race time came, and I didn't want to leave her.

The past two weeks were extremely hard for me exercise wise.  My poor posture in being pregnant and holding Rory has given me intense back spasms.  I finally began running nice and slow the first few days before the race and that led to the spasms returning.  I really wanted to run the race because I had never done anything like this before; however, was frightened that my back would start to spasm and I would finish right before the fat 80 year old man completely letting down my husband and daughter.

The run was an 8k race with several obstacles, including tall sand dunes, walking in high water, mud pits, tunnels, a small wall and lots and lots of sand.  It was a lot of fun; however, I didn't expect there to be so much sand!  We started out on the beach, and I was shocked to see how many people chose not to go over the large hills!  So many people ran around them in the hard sand, which will give you a better time, but why would you sign up for a race like this if you didn't want to partake in all of the obstacles.
This race was my first time running in the loose sand and it was very difficult!

We left the beach, went and went into some water, it wasn't too high on most people but it was up to my chest!  you had to wait in line for this obstacle because there were so many people at the race, 2700 to be exact!  We got a bit of a sand break by running through some woods, but only for a bit and then we were right back in the godforsaken loose sand again.

The best thing happened, not only did we begin running on packed sand which led to concrete but that was where i first saw my cheering squad, Jon and Rory!  Perhaps it was because we were out of the sand, or perhaps my excitement of seeing my husband and daughter kicked in, but I felt like springs were on the bottom of my shoes and I could run for hours.  Jon saw me and was taking pictures, he ran with me for a few yards and i was talking to Rory but she didn't look at me.  It was time to pass a few people and go up the hill.

I wish I would have known the course better because I totally would have pushed it harder being off the sand, but instead I ran a little bit faster but not too much, Id save my sprinting for the end of the race.....Little did i know that the sand traps had only began and the rest of the race would be covered in sand!  Seeing daddy and baby was just what i needed to keep on going.

After running through the field we finally entered the first mud pit. it smelled like a giant fart and I kept wondering if some of the people ahead of me were farting of if the mud really smelled that bad.  I walked fast in the mud because I was afraid of falling and twisting my ankle.  More importantly I kept telling myself to keep my mouth closed!

out of the Mud....back into the sand!

Run...run...Run....I hate cursing in front of children so I don't do it in front of Rory, but believe you me....I wanted to call the sand a few four letter words!

I didn't see Daddy and Rory for a while and the sand was really kicking my butt.  I tried to find the sand that had any kind of grass or reed growth on it because i knew it may be harder sand than the loose sand, but by this time it didn't matter, the sand was winning this race and I was just playing by its rules.  Surprisingly, my back was one part of my body that the sand wasn't trying to hurt!

There were people walking, throwing up, and just stopping now.  The sand had won.  I kept thinking that if I stopped running it would just be harder, and the thought of finishing fast to make sure Rory's schedule wasn't too interrupted kept me going.  I thought of Rory's leg and if she would be able to do this some day.  It kept me going until I heard "Your doing great, Mama!"

It was Jon and Rory again, and those springs came back in my wet muddy shoes and I moved a bit quicker (as quick as the damn sand would let me).  I knew now I was close to the finish line.  Again, hearing and seeing them was just what I needed

By this time my calves were getting pretty tired, but the screams at the finish line were a quick fix to get them moving.  One last big mud pit intact with ropes so you could would have to dive in it...unless of course you are 5'1 and could just bend over.

"Keep your mouth closed or the nasty fart mud will get in your mouth."

we now had one huge muddy hill to go up, it too was extremely crowded and you had to wait behind people, but once I was down it was on....I was off.  Daddy and Rory were there and ran with me while daddy was shooting pictures.  It was strange, there wasn't many people ahead of me, and I couldn't hear many people behind me.

I crossed the finish line and looked for daddy and Rory....I couldn't wait to hold my girl again, I had to find a towel and fast to get all this mud and sand off.  I spotted then and sprinted over to them.

I had finished- and not too shabby too!  I was third in my age group- 47:11 and for not training, never running in sand, and having back issues I'll take it.  Results are in!

I couldn't have done it without my support group of daddy and Rory.  It really meant so much to me to have them there.  For Jon to take his Saturday morning to wait 47 minutes for me to run and for Rory to break her routine and be in a strange place with strange people, it meant so much to me that I am having a hard time putting it into words.  Rory is my inspiration for doing everything anymore, she keeps me on my toes in more ways than one, and it doesn't hurt that shes the cutest thing in the world.  Not many people know what it is like to have a good husband, and luckily, I have a great one.

The best part of the race: seeing Rory drink out of a water bottle herself, giving Jon one of my ice cold beers at 9am, and sharing a banana with Rory.
